Progress until you reach the large room with the hologram in the center. Here, you’re introduced to Mission Challenges.
Mission Challenges Explained
Mission Challenges are a series of challenges you can complete for rewards. Each mission has its own set of Mission Challenges, which can range from killing demons or using a move a particular number of times. The rewards are typically Gold, but you can unlock Skins in some missions.
Sentinel Barracks Mission Challenges
There are three Mission Challenges you can complete in Sentinel Barracks:
- Rip and Tear
- Kill 40 demons.
- Plunderer
- Find 150 gold.
- Prize Fighter
- Execute a 3 hit Melee Combo 3 times.
Mission Challenges count toward 100% chapter completion. Challenges that can be guided in walkthroughs include examples like destroying a number of structures. But for the most part, Mission Challenges are objectives such as acquiring enough kills on a particular demon or using an ability a number of times. Those may not be included in the walkthroughs, so keep an eye on your Mission Challenges progress from the menu.
To learn more about Mission Challenges and how to complete them all, check out our comprehensive guide.
Clear the Barracks
Your primary task in the first section of the chapter is to clear the barracks of threats.
Follow the quest marker from the large room with the hologram and through the curving hallway. The game leads you to another room where you’ll discover a new toy to play with.
Retrieve the Skullcrusher Pulverizer
At the center of a room, next to a screen and torches, you’ll find your next weapon: the Skullcrusher Pulverizer.
Interact with the gun to add it to your arsenal.
The Skullcrusher Pulverizer lives up to its name, crushing skulls and sending out the bone fragments at a high velocity. It can damage enemies in a wide arc, making it ideal if you need to clear a room filled with demons.
Follow the quest marker, which takes you through a door and into a room filled with targets. This is a great moment to learn how to use the Skullcrusher. Have fun grinding demon meat. You should also be able to easily clear the Rip and Tear Mission Challenge in this room.
When you’re done, open the Automap to note the nearby secrets and collectibles. Facing the back wall on the opposite side of the room’s entrance, you can see a line of Gold bars and a Toy collectible.
There is a doorway leading to the rooms, but it’s locked shut. Follow the quest marker outside and kill the demon forces awaiting your arrival.
Gold Stash 1 Location
The first Gold Stash of the chapter can be obtained after getting the Skullcrusher Pulverizer. Follow the quest marker outside and gather the Gold on the staircase down.
At the bottom of the stairs is a door locked by a gate. You can peer inside the gate to spot the collectible, but you won’t be able to unlock the door from outside.
Go back up the stairs and enter the doorway where the quest marker is leading you.
Destroy the waves of Shield Soldiers marching down the hall and kill the Mancubus at the end.
Stop before going down the hallway.
Gold Stash 2 Location
The second stash of Gold you can obtain is in the entrance room of the hallway where you fought the line of Shield Soldiers and the Mancubus. Facing the hallway, look left for the Gold.
The Gold also clues you on where to find even more secrets.
Secret Area 1 Location
The chapter's first Secret Area can be found near the hallway where you fought the Shield Soldiers and Mancubus. To enter the area, look for a wall to the left of the hallway entrance with the blue Shield Charge symbol. Use the charge to smash through and enter Secret Area 1.
Secret Area 1 contains many items to gather.
Gold Stash 3 Location
The third Gold Stash can be found in the chapter's first Secret Area. After breaking through the Shield Charge wall, gather the Gold in the room beyond.
But wait, there's more!
Hell Knight Toy Location
The Hell Knight Toy can be obtained not long after getting the Skullcrusher Pulverizer. Enter the room before the hallway where you fought the Shield Soldiers and Mancubus. From the entrance, look along the wall to the left for three Gold bars and a doorway barred off with wooden planks. Use your Shield Charge to burst through the planks.
Look for the Hell Knight Toy Collectible on the platform above the stairs.
Use the climbable wall to return to the room next to the Shield Soldier hallway. Travel down the hallway to progress the mission.
You’ll soon reach another area with a Gold Chest and bars high above and no clear way to reach them.
How to Reach the Gold Chest in the Barracks
Open your Automap. You can see two elevated hallways bookending the circular room in the center. On the other side is another line of Gold. Head in that direction and stop when you get to the narrow room below the second elevated hallway.
To reach the Gold Chest above, head to the other side of the room with the green button in the center and look for the Green Flesh Node. Use Shield Jump to reach the elevated hallway.
Gold Stash 4 Location
The fourth Gold Stash in the chapter can be obtained after using the Green Flesh Node in the area after the Mancubus hallway. Progress to the end of the elevated walkway to get the Gold.
Follow and collect the line of Gold bars to reach the end of the hallway. When you get to the other side, stop and look to your left to spot a large metal cube with the Shield Charge symbol.
Drop to the ground and Shield Charge the cube to knock it to the opposite hallway. Doing so turns one side of the cube into a climbable wall.
Climb up the cube and clamber to the elevated hallway. Grab the gold and turn left. Travel to the end of the hallway for the Gold Chest.
Secret Area 2 Location
The second Secret Area of the chapter can be found after solving the Gold Chest puzzle room after clearing the hallway with the Shield Soldiers and Mancubus.
Solving the puzzle rewards you with Gold and the Gold Chest.
Gold Stash 5 Location
The fifth Gold Stash of the chapter is a reward for solving an environmental puzzle to reach a Gold Chest. It's in the section after the Mancubus hallway. After reaching the hallway, travel to the end for the Gold Chest reward.
Return to the center of the area where you’ll find a large, green button on the floor.
Stand on the green button and turn to look for a doorway where an elevator drops down a short way to reveal a glowing, red lock. Toss your shield to destroy the lock and drop the elevator, revealing a climbable wall.
Run and leap to reach the climbable wall and scamper to the top.
Defeat the Hell Knight Assault
Continue following the quest marker until you reach a large, arena-like room with a stack of gold in the center. After convincing yourself it’s clearly not a clever trap, descend the stairs to the platform.
Gold Stash 6 Location
The sixth Gold Stash of the chapter can be found in the center of a room (that isn't a trap room) after solving the Gold Chest puzzle. Enter the center of the room and claim the Gold.
Oh, no! It’s a trap! A barrier surrounds the platform, and you’re assaulted by wave after wave of Hell Knights.
Use your parry to stun the beasts while fighting them off one by one. Melee the fodder demons for ammunition and health if needed.
Once all the demons are dealt with, the barrier will drop, allowing you to leave.
Continue progressing the mission. You’ll find yourself fighting through a hallway (with more demons to fight) that turns to the right to a point of no return.
Opening your Automap, you can see an area with Gold above you.
Near the center of the hallway on the left is a locked door. Interact with the latch to the left to open the door.
Gold Stash 7 Location
The seventh Gold Stash of the chapter can be found in a room attached to a hallway after the fight with the Hell Knights.Open the door in the hallway with the latch to the left of the door and follow the trail of Gold up the climbable walls and to the walkway above.
The area above the room also contains the next Secret Area of the level.
Secret Area 3 Location
The third Secret Area can be located an area above the hallway after the Hell Knight assault.Open the door to the room attached to the hallway and climb up to find Secret Area 3.
Heads Up! Point of No Return
Follow the quest marker until you reach a door with green lights on both sides. Inside is a massive drop.
This is a point of no return in Sentinel Barracks. Make sure you’re finished with the first section of the chapter before continuing.
Check your progress: At this point in the chapter, you should have 3/6 Secrets, 111 Gold, and 1 Toy collectible.
Finish Clearing the Barracks
The first section of the chapter is nearly complete, but you have many more demons to slay before you can check that box.
After dropping down into the pit, proceed through the area, killing the horde of demons in your way. Watch for the armored Mancubus, which stands as the biggest threat.
Proceed until you reach a large hangar where soldiers stand guard near tanks.
Ruby 1 Location
To the left of the massive door leading out of the barracks is a statue holding the first Ruby of the game.Approach the statue and interact with it to get the Ruby, a rare resource you can use at a Sentinel Shrine to unlock a higher tier of upgrades for your equipment. The exit door opens after you acquire the Ruby.
Leave via the door and drop into the massive hole in the floor to end the first section of the chapter.
Reach the Dragons Den
Your next objective in Sentinel Barracks is to reach the Dragons Den to meet up with your buddy. But first, you’ll get another new toy to show the demons. Follow the quest marker to the drop pod.
Interact with it to reveal another weapon: the Impaler.
How to Use the the Impaler
The Impaler is a weapon that lives up to its reputation. It fires metal rail spikes, which deal a massive amount of damage. The weapon fires slowly, favoring accuracy over bullet spam.Headshots with the Impaler deal more damage. The Impaler is a sister weapon to the Shredder. Press the F key or the X or square button on a controller to swap between the Impaler and the Shredder.
A mass of demons spawns after you acquire the Impaler, allowing you to test the new weapon. Clear out the enemy forces and leave via the exit door indicated by the quest marker.
At the end of the hallway is a Sentinel Shrine. Feel free to spend your Gold and/or Ruby on any upgrades you desire.
Head around to the other side of the cave, where you’ll notice the passageway to the exit is a little too high to reach.
To the left of the exit is a red button on the floor. Standing on it activates a jump pad below the exit, but leaving it turns it off. What a conundrum.
How to Activate the Jump Pad
To activate the jump pad and keep it on, hop onto the button (or just be near it) and look from the exit toward the wall to your right. You should spot a Green Flesh Node above a large metal cube inserted into the wall.
Use your shield to leap over the cube. Now in the room, use your Shield Charge to knock the cube out of the hole and onto the button.
Once this is done, the jump pad will remain on, allowing you to leave. Continue following the quest marker to continue the chapter.
You’re eventually led outside. Drop down the ledge and fight the Imp Stalker that appears on top of the staircase left against the rocky wall.
Above the stairs is a doorway barred off by wooden planks and, just beyond, is a Life Sigil. You can’t reach it from here.
Proceed until you get to the broken bridge. Look to the left of the bridge and down to spot a chunk of land with a line of Gold bars. This area and the Life Sigil can be accessed, but you’ll need to cross to the other side first.
Move to the ragged edge of the broken bridge to spot the Green Flesh Node attached to the broken archway on the other side. Use Shield Jump to cross.
How to Get the Demonic Essence Armor Upgrade
You’ll face off against a large horde of demons on the other side of the broken bridge. Once you clear out the enemies, an armored Mancubus leader will spawn.
How to Defeat the Mancubus Leader
The Mancubus Leader is armored and fires a moving wall of demonic energy your way. Use your shield to deflect the energy by parrying the green surge that appears on the left or right side of the wall. The Mancubus Leader will use dual flamethrowers if you start getting too close, but if you get right up to its ugly face, it’ll use an area move that can be deflected with a parry. If you’re feeling spicy, this is a good way to kill the beast quickly.
Once the Mancubus Leader goes down, you can claim its Demonic Essence, increasing your armor capacity.
With the area clear, open your Automap and look for the ledge to the right of the broken bridge, across the way from the area where you spotted the Gold bars earlier. Approach it, but try not to fall off the edge.
Gold Stash 8 Location
The eighth Gold Stash of the map can be found near the area where you fought the Mancubus Leader. Sprint and leap from the wooden platform with the armor pieces over the gap and to the other side.
Grab the Gold on the ground to mark off the stash.
Continue past the Gold to locate the next Secret Area.
Secret Area 4 Location
The fourth Secret Area of the chapter can be found near the section where you fight the Mancubus Leader. Leap from the wooden platform to the other side where you find Gold Stash 6.Climb up until you reach the room with the Life Sigil. Here’s where you’ll discover Secret Area 4. Use your Shield Charge against the wooden planks to leave.
Head back across the broken bridge and progress until you reach the next area. You’ll find yourself alongside the edge. A flying vehicle smashes into a building across the way, spiraling out of sight.
Continue, but stop once you reach a second broken bridge.
Before moving to the next section, open your Automap to spot the surrounding collectible items, including Gold and the second Ruby of the map.
Gold Stash 9 Location
The ninth Gold Stash of the map can be found in the section near the second broken bridge after the Mancubus Leader fight. To reach it, stand in the center of the area and look toward the broken bridge. To the right, you’ll see a gargoyle-esque statue and a fence.
Head to the gap between the statue and the fence and carefully look down to see a platform below. Drop to the platform below.
Turn around and climb the wall.
Look to your right after reaching the top of the ledge and follow the Gold bars around.
Watch out: Turrets lob balls of fire from the other side, but you also have to deal with Zombies and a Nightmare Imp Stalker.
Climb the wall past the hallway with the turrets. Continue until you climb a wall, which takes you to the area next to the prior broken bridge.
Follow the Gold bars to the left of it to find a stack of Gold to finish obtaining the stash.
The remaining Gold is found in the chapter's next Secret Area.
Secret Area 5 Location
The fifth Secret Area of the chapter can be found on the other side of the wall next to the second broken bridge. Drop through the gap to the right of the bridge and progress until you find the Secret Area.
Gather the Gold, but don't forget the precious gem!
Ruby 2 Location
The second Ruby can be found on the other side of a wall near the broken bridge following the Mancubus Leader fight.Drop through the gap to the right of the bridge and progress until you reach Secret Area 5. The statue holding the Ruby is in the area against the wall.
Progress down the broken bridge until you reach the end, but do not drop down to the next area!
Gold Stash 10 Location
The tenth Gold Stash is inside a broken tower after the second bridge.
Head to the end of the walkway and jump to the platform attached to the tower.Climb the stairs to the right and enter the tower. Fight off the two Nightmare Imp Stalkers to claim the Gold Chest in the center.
Leave via the door to the right of the chest and leap from the section of the broken stairs to the area below.
Collecting the chest should complete the Plunderer Mission Challenge.
Press on through waves of demons until you reach what appears to be a town square. Stop next to the tree in the center and open your Automap to spot the nearby secrets.
Gold Stash 11 Location
The eleventh Gold Stash of the chapter can be obtained not long after the 10th. After reaching a town square with a church and a tree in the center, stand at the tree and look at the front of the church. Now, look to the left to spot a trail of Gold bars going up a staircase. Follow the Gold up the stairs to reach the roof.
Follow the Gold to the final Secret Area of the chapter.
Secret Area 6 Location
The sixth secret and final Secret Area of Sentinel Barracks can be found on top of the building across from the church near the end of the mission. Head up the stairs following the Gold to reach the area, where you'll find a soldier protecting a group of citizens.
After discovering the Secret Area, look for the Skin past the statue.
Nightmare Accelerator Skin Location
The Nightmare Accelerator Skin is located in Secret Area 6. Search the top of the building opposite the church in the town square with a tree in the center. Look for the skin pickup past the statue and between the building's two spires.
Continue following the quest marker until you reach a gap in the fence with a long drop to the ground below.
Heads Up! Point of No Return
You’ve reached the second and final point of no return in Sentinel Barracks. Be sure you’ve finished everything before continuing.
Check your progress: At this point in the chapter, you should have 6/6 Secrets, 191 Gold, 2/2 Rubies, the Demonic Essence - Armor Upgrade, and 3/3 Collectibles.
Reach the Aratum
Drop to the area below and progress until you reach a large, open area with a tower in the corner.
Open your Automap to spot two more secrets to find.
Gold Stash 12 Location
The twelfth Gold Stash of the chapter is located near the door to the Dragons Den. This is close to the end of the chapter. You can find the Gold by searching under two carts near the edge of the large, open space before the final door.
Rip and tear the carts to reach the Gold.
Follow the quest marker to the next section, but stop right as you reach the bottom of the stairs and look left to spot a trail of Gold.
Gold Stash 13 Location
The final Gold Stash of the chapter can be found near the last Sentinel Shrine of the level. Descend the stairs and stop. Look left to spot the Gold making a trail up a hill.
Sentinel Barracks Codex Location
The final collectible of the chapter is the Sentinel Barracks Codex, which is located to the left of the massive door at the end of the level. Follow the trail of Gold up the hill to acquire the Codex.
After you acquire the Sentinel Barracks Codex, you should have 100% completion of Sentinel Barracks.
Return to the bottom of the staircase next to the massive door. Use the Sentinel Shrine if you need to complete any last-second upgrades.
When ready, use your Shield Charge to burst through the wooden barrier of the door.
Vagary Champion Boss Fight
As you enter the arena beyond, you’re introduced to the Vagary Champion, a massive, multi-legged beast strapped with gold armor.
This boss demon is a rough one, able to send volleys of gunfire your way while shrugging off damage due to the gilded metal strapped to its frame.
Stay at least medium range while avoiding its shots that it sends in a wave-like pattern. Look for the green orbs mixed with the orange and deflect them back with your shield.
Avoid the yellow blobs it lobs at you in an arc. Wherever these slime balls land, they unleash a cloud of toxic gas for a short time.
To defeat the Vagary Champion, keep deflecting shots to fill the purple stun bar below its red health bar. After the stun bar gets filled, the demon drops to the ground.
Quickly sprint around to its back and fire away at its soft, vulnerable abdomen.
Continue the pattern until the Vagary Champion enters a dazed state, where you can kill it via Execute.
With that, the demon realm crowns a new champion, and Sentinel Barracks comes to an end. The next mission is The Holy City of Aratum.
